In 1895, Capt Joshua Slocum was the first to single-handedly circumnavigate the world in his 36-foot sloop, Spray. Reading his magnificent book Sailing Alone Around The World it is obvious that he knew every aspect of his boat intimately (he hand-built it after all), and this knowledge enabled him to handle his boat safely through the most atrocious conditions on many occasions. While today’s craft are much better appointed, let us still adopt Capt. Slocum as our inspiration to know our boats as well as we should.
